The event took place at Durdham Downs on Sunday 20th September. There was a fantastic turn out with over 1,000 people taking part, compared to the 600 last year.
Julia at fishtank and a friend joined "Midi's gang" organised by a friend of hers who sadly lost her husband, Midi, to prostate cancer last year, and is a strong supporter, fundraiser and volunteer of the charity. Tom from our sister company, Ashton Consulting had signed up but unfortunately couldn't take part due to a rugby injury the day before. But he vows to be there next year and make up for it!
It is a sad fact that as many as 35,000 men are diagnosed every year in this country with prostate cancer and over 10,000 die from the disease, equal to the number of deaths in women from breast cancer. But prostate cancer research receives only 25% of the funding spent on research into breast cancer in women. There is a diagnostic test available to screen for prostate cancer but currently only 8% of men request this potentially life-saving test. To help raise much needed funds for research and prostate cancer treatment, Rotary in Bristol organise an annual sponsored walk, jog or run for the whole family around Bristol Downs. Run for the Future took place on Sunday 20th September 2009.
As part of Midi's gang, Julia and the group raised over £1,000 towards the charity. Thank you to everyone who contributed! The money will go to The Bristol Urological Institute which aims to improve the treatment and care of people with urological disorders, to support and develop research with particular emphasis on cancers of the urinary tract and the problem of incontinence and to provide a high standard of training for nurses, medical students, doctors and surgeons.
